LANGUAGE TESTING AND
LANGUAGE CREDITS
Note: You must be a currently enrolled USU student to get these credits on your transcript.
HOW DO I RECEIVE LOWER-DIVISION CREDITS FOR THE
LANGUAGE I ALREADY KNOW?
* You can take the CAPE test for:
Contact the Department of Languages, Philosophy & SpeechCommunication, 435-797-1209 or go to Old Main 204 to make an appointment for the test.

After you complete the test and it indicates you can bypass Lower-Division classes, you can get a form from our office, Main 204, that you take to Registration and pay $25-$100 for those credits. After you pay for the credits, then you must return the form and receipt to Main 204. If you don't, the credits will not be posted on your transcript.

You will get either an A or B on your transcript depending upon your score on the test. With this purchase you can get up to 16 credits of Lower-Division language credit that will be placed on your transcript as transfer credit. These grades will count toward your cumulative GPA.

Take the Chinese or Japanese Test --To make an appointment for the test, contact Department Office. Call 435-797-1209. After you take the test you must take either CHIN or JAPN 3010, 3020, 2020, 2010, 1020 depending upon how you placed with the test. Once the class is completed and you have a grade, you can come to the Department Office, Main 204, and get the form to buy the lower division credits.

Register for KOR 3010 or 3020 or for PORT 3040 --Contact Dept. Office for help getting authorization to register for the class. Call -- 435-797-1211 or 435-797-1209. After you take the class and you have a grade, you can come to the Department Office, Main 204, and get the form to buy the lower division credits.Sometimes a prerequisite block will prevent you from registering for one of these classes. Please call our department office at 435-797-1209 or come to Old Main 204 and we can authorize you on-line for the class.

* OR you can take the BYU FLATS Test . They test for:

After you have taken the BYU FLATS Test and you have received your test results, come to the Languages, Philosophy & Speech Communication office, Main 204 and get a form to buy the credits. (You must get at least 12 credits on the results of the test in order to buy the 16 credits of Lower-Division classes.) You take the form to Registration and pay for the credits -- then you must return the form and receipt to Main 204. If you don't, the credits will not be posted on your transcript.

You will get Pass credits on your transcript. With this purchase you can get 16 Lower-Division language Pass credits that will be placed on your transcript as transfer credit.

NOTE: 12 Pass credits from BYU is equal to 16 Pass credits at USU.
